Thunderbird: Thunderbird

Here’s a band completely new to me; Canadian hard rockers Thunderbird. They released their debut album What’s The Word? in 2006 and after a few years absence came Heavyweight in 2016. That brings us to the band’s new self-titled release.

In the band are Marc LaFrance (vocals and vocal arrangements), Brice Tabish (guitars), Rob Becker (bass), Kelly Stodola (drums and percussion) and Rod Coogan (guitar solo on track 1).

If you dig ‘70s classic hard rock like Judas Priest, Whitesnake, Thin Lizzy and Cheap Trick you should really enjoy this album. Excellent hard rock riffs, including some pretty cool chord progressions and stellar lead vocals are at the core of this band. Tabish is an excellent player coming at the listener with thick and heavy riffs and bluesy hard rock soloing. LaFrance’s vocals also really stand out. A perfect fit for that classic rock style.

The first track “Liar (Fool’s Gold)” begins with a Queen style vocal followed by a burst of hard rock like we heard in the ‘70s. The riffs recall classic Judas Priest and the vocals are very strong. An excellent vocal arrangement in this one. “Little Jenny” is another fine rocker as is “Star”, a prime rock and roll song with a ripping guitar solo. “Into The Sun” is driven by a fine rhythm section and some subtle rhythmic changes while “Painted Lady” touches on some progressive elements, especially the smart chord progressions. “I’m With You” is quite a soft and tender ballad with another great vocal delivery while “On The Brink” is more ‘70s inspired classic hard rock with a strong inkling towards AC/DC.

The disc ends with the more moody and introspective “King Rat” featuring the piano work of Chris Gestrin followed by “Vampire” where the band uses a string section adding an orchestral touch to the heavy riffs. I hear a little bit of City Boy in this one. It is truly an excellent track.
