Like the bastard child of Black Sabbath and Red Fang comes Dead Now, a trio from Atlanta comprised of current & former members of Torche, Riddle of Steel, Tilts and Day Old Man, vocalist/guitarist Andrew Elstner, drummer Bobby Theberge, and bassist Derek Schulz. Their self-titled debut for Brutal Panda Records, is basically a 5 song, 20-minute EP that boils, bobs, and weaves from start to finish. Opener "Brunette" contains some meaty, fuzz laden riffing over pounding grooves and Elstner's high pitched Ozzy styled whine. Both "Ritchie Blackmourning" and "Bird Leaf" are fuzzy, stoner-iffic mashers, the riffs gargantuan and the grooves immense. Think Red Fang, The Melvins, and Master of Reality era Sabbath and you have a good idea where these guys are coming from. It doesn't get more neanderthal than "Powershapes", the riffs piledriving in their simplicity but so damn heavy, while the band toss in some psychedelia & space rock on the closer "Motorekt", images of Hawkwind and Monster Magnet popping up left and right as the trippy arrangement eventually morphs into a raging stoner pummeling.
Based on what we have here, it's safe to say that Dead Now have a lot to offer and are a stoner/heavy rock band that you'll be well advised to put on your immediate radar.
