You may not be familiar with the name QFT, but this solo project from powerhouse Swedish vocalist Linnea Vikström -- a touring member of Therion since 2010 -- is well worth checking out. Vikström’s fierce voice penetrates the 10 songs on Live in Space -- from the doom-metal opener “End of the Universe” to the closing cover of Bjork’s dark and mysterious “Jóga,” which focuses on the singer’s (slightly) softer side. In between, there’s the power-metal anthem “Big Bang,” the hard rocker “Black Hole” (which Heart would have killed for in the late Eighties) and the piano-driven title track power ballad.
About the only duds here are “Time,” a plodding yet anxious track that doesn’t properly showcase Vikström’s voice, and “Light Speed," on which Vikström oversings.
QFT stands for Quantum Field Theory, and the songs on the 46-minute Live in Space are based on scientific articles and themes about the universe and quantum physics. But you don’t need a stratospheric IQ to enjoy this music. Influences range from Black Sabbath to Symphony X to Van Halen, and the album was recorded live with a three-man band under the expert guidance of veteran Swedish sound engineer Lennart Östlund (ABBA, Led Zeppelin), who makes Live in Space sound as epic as the universe itself.
