I grew up in Southern California and spent quite a bit of time checking out punk bands in local clubs. There’s something infectious about California punk, a casualness of attitude and purpose that somehow translates into solid work. When I listened to this album, I was sometimes reminded of The Dickies, a crazy punk band from the 1980s that had a knack for punk rock that was also playful and catchy. I doubt The Primals are trying for a Dickies vibe here, but there’s something about these tracks that brings me back to my younger years. The music is just really playful and melodic and loose and sloppy in all the right ways. Even though The Primals are an LA band, the members have a generally strong connection to D.C. punk. Many fans will recognize the band’s lineup: John Henry (vocalist for Darkest Hour) is on guitar and vocals; Chad Fjerstad (formerly Dead to Fall) is on bass; and Andrew Black (formerly of The Explosion) plays the drums. Together, they make a pretty good band that plays songs that are both heavy and catchy and playful. I liked “Dead Predators” and “Together Whenever.”
