Borracho is a stoner rock power trio hailing from Washington, D.C. They have three full length vinyl releases to their credit but with the new album titled Riffography, a mixture singles, B-sides and splits, they decided to make their music available on CD. I had previously not heard the band before and if you are in the same boat this is a nice career retrospective to have.
Sludge, stoner, doom, whatever you want to call this, the music is heavy and the grooves are relentless. Sure the band has the art of the repetitive riff down pat but the solid rhythmic grooves and gravelly vocals almost put me in a trance while listening. “Rectify” is a fine opener with its fuzz soaked riffs and heavy distortion. The speedy “Circulos Concéntricos” and its barked out vocals is another slice of heavy intensity. More heavy stoner can be found in “Mob Gathering” as well as the distortion heavy “Short Ride (When It’s Over)” with another solid riff progression. The eleven plus minute “Stockpile” is a fuzz drenched slow burner with trippy guitar exploits. The catchy “King’s Disease” is another cutting doom inflected number before turning into quite the speed fest. The slow riffs eventually return. And so it goes…
Riffography has really grown on me, especially the lead vocals which at first I found to be too raw. Something must have clicked as they now sound much better to my ears. If you are new to Borracho and appreciate stoner rock/metal this needs to be in your collection.
