Black Majesty: Children of the Abyss

It’s rare to hear much progressive metal come out of Australia and perhaps even more rare to hear newer bands attempt progressive metal without some homage to Helloween. Children of the Abyss opens with “Dragons Unite” which is heavily influenced by Helloween. Even the singer sounds a great deal like the Helloween vocalist. These are compliments because the vocals and guitar work is top notch and a perfect method to introduce the album and the group to the world from the very first track.

“Somethings Going On” is the next song and has that progressive metal pop sound that could easily play on the radio but still kick butt with the best of them. It’s a cool and catchy song. The title track “Children of the Abyss"is decidedly less Helloweenish and more like the sound of who Black Majesty is crafting to make their own. I rather like it for its original arrangement and fantastic guitar solo.

“Hideaway” is another fine example of Black Majesty tearing away from past influences and standing up on their own with a superior performance. This is a dramatic track of power and percussion and perhaps one of the best songs I have heard this year. A few tracks down is “Sanctified” a darker song with a heavier tone. What’s clearly evident is the production of this album is superb for it truly allows the songs to be what they were intended instead of forcing them into some cookie cutter sonic format. A talented band can grow from such a wise and professional production experience.

The album wraps with “Reach into the Darkness” a nice turn to a Queensryche meets Helloween hybrid that combines the best of those influential elements along with the band’s signature mark of dramatic fury and fine musicianship. This is the type of band you know won’t disappoint in concert or with their next release. I’m looking forward to both.
