The Crotals are a Swiss extreme metal band that mostly works in sludge metal but also draws on other elements when they need to. The music on this album is a little heavier than the music on the last album. The biggest difference is that the band just cuts loose with powerful riffs that crush everything in their way. I was especially fond of the riffs on “Dry Flood,” a blistering closing track. I also really liked “Lava,” a song that is as heavy and destructive as its name.
On this album, the Crotals also introduce a new singer, Randy Schaller (Voice of Ruin). He has a rough and powerful voice that demands to be heard. He also brings adds another layer of heaviness to the band’s overall sound. As I write this, I am listening to his performance on “Hello,” a song that just rips through everything. Overall, this is a strong new release that fans of High on Fire might enjoy. I may also appeal to fans of other classic bands like Crowbar even if this band’s tempo is a little faster. If you like good riffs and a rough timbre, you should find something here to enjoy.
