Newman: Decade II

Given the album’s title it can’t be much of a shock to learn that Decade II is a celebration of Newman (the band’s) second decade of existence. Two discs, thirty four songs including a boatload of rarities this is practically as much Newman as anybody could want but it’s also a very fine primer to begin looking into their oeuvre if, like so many (too many in fact) you have managed to miss much of their not exactly in-the-spotlight career.

If you are a long term fan then disc two is the place for you given that it features the rarities, seventeen songs, some that were written and even recorded, but not included on the final releases, songs that were written for other artists. I was particularly interested in the submission for Toby Hitchcock’s album, it’s excellent and two songs that were originally released as Japanese bonus tracks. There are some songs, as before, that were “works in progress� especially recorded for this release and also another six songs from the Aerial sessions. Led by the eponymous Steve Newman, Newman make classic melodic rock, sometimes quite muscular, sometimes fluffy and 80s influences but always with solid hooks and memorable choruses. There’s a rich vein of quality running through the entire album and fans of British melodic rock by bands such as FM, Dare or Blood Red saints will find a great deal to enjoy and if you skip over to the band website below Decade and Decade II are available together for a very nice price.
