Averhoff Jr, Carlos: Jazz Meets Cuban Timba

Cuban born saxophonist Carlos Averhoff Jr. began his music schooling in Cuba before continuing in the U.S. attending the Berklee College of Music and the New England Conservatory of Music. His father Carlos Sr. was a notable saxophonist in his own right; the old saying say ‘a chip off the old block’ certainly applies.

Averhoff released his debut iRESI in 2015 and is now back with his sophomore release Jazz Meets Cuban Timba and let me just say what a fine album it is. Its deep grooves and swinging melodies had me almost immediately. Besides its melodic charms this is quite complex and angular at times with the saxophone, piano and trumpet lines displaying an intricate nature all their own. The rhythms and grooves can incorporate subtle shifts adding to the complexity.

The Wayne Shorter classic “Yes Or No” is given an exciting treatment with its off kilter rhythms, calm to urgent playing and tremendous saxophone and trumpet solos. The Averhoff original “Raquel” is a lovely tune as the sax and trumpet intermingle in a most delightful way. Piano and sax solos are further icing on the cake. A lovely interpretation of Jule Styne’s “I Fall In Love Too Easily” with the bass and trumpet particularly revealing as well as “It Could Happen To You” where complexity and irregularity are offset by the quintet’s melodic aspirations are further proof of the band’s expert prowess.

Jazz Meets Cuban Timba swings and grooves with the best jazz releases so far this year. Go out and buy it…it’s that good.
