Blood of the Sun are a hard rock band from Texas, and their latest album for Listenable Records, Blood's Thicker Than Love, shows the six piece taking their queue from such iconic acts as Deep Purple, Mountain, Humble Pie, KISS, Cactus, and Led Zeppelin. Led by drummer Henry Vasquez (Saint Vitus), the band is rounded out by keyboard player Dave Gryder, guitarists Wyatt Burton & Alex Johnson, vocalist Sean Vargas, and bassist Roger 'Kip' Yma.
Though only containing six tracks, there's plenty of meat to be found on Blood's Thicker Than Love. "Keep the Lemmy's Comin'" was written just after the death of the legendary Motorhead frontman, and is a raucous heavy rocker that chugs and steamrolls in the spirt of Lemmy's great band. "My Time" offers up a boatload of crunchy blues metal riffing and Hammond organ, the Deep Purple and Mountain influences hard to ignore, and the upbeat grooves of "Livin' For the Night" again remind of Purple but with an '80s hard rock attitude, the guitars blazing and the Hammond completely kicking ass. Blistering lead guitars permeate the raging "Air Rises As You Drown", and the guitar duo trade off some serious exchanges with Gryder on the Humble Pie styled rumbler "Stained Glass Window", a great vehicle also for the commanding pipes of Vargas. A more soulful approach is taken on the bluesy "Blood of Road", Gryder pulling out his electric piano for a nice jazzy touch as the rest of the band slowly simmer before unleashing an onslaught of molten blues rock, the Hammond then jumping into the fire with the chugging guitars and pumping rhythms. Breathtaking and ass kicking at the same time!
Mighty fine stuff indeed from Blood of the Sun, the band cooking up a wild pot of Texas stew fueled by '70s heavy rock & blues elements for a highly enjoyable album. I think I'll have a second helping please!
