Nooumena: Controlled Freaks
Nooumena is a French avant-prog band who have been around for a number of years. They released their debut album Argument With Eagerness in 2011. They are back with their sophomore effort titled Controlled Freaks.
Experimental rock music, very angular and noisy is what this band gives the listener. The guitar work is fuzzy, buzzing and generally off kilter, often forming dense musical soundscapes. The chord progressions and note choices are unusual to say the least and this listen is anything but boring. The band uses plenty of weird atmospheric effects sometimes lending a creepy vibe to go along with a very atypical vocal approach. I can’t say I’m a fan of the vocals though as they are a bit much for me covering too many styles and the shouting is something I can do without. That said, I am sure they will appeal to fans expecting something completely off the wall. There is no doubting the variety here, from intense to creepy ambience and many twists and turns in between.
So for me there are pluses and minuses to this work and because I prefer more informed melodies in my music this has been a hard disc to get into. Still, the band’s creativity and general nod to RIO and avant musical forms should not go unnoticed within the progressive community.
