This album was originally released on CD in 2017 by Nightbreaker Records and on cassette by Temple of Mystery Records. It is now available on vinyl thanks to Shadow Kingdom Records. All this shifting around is a good sign, one that suggests Droid is doing something that various labels think everyone will want to hear. Now that I’ve listened to this album a few times, I have to agree. Droid is a trio from Canada and they play a style of tech-thrash that should appeal to fans of the style. The band isn’t reinventing the sound, but they play it really well. Listeners will especially enjoy Jacob Montgomery’s flashy guitar leads. One of the coolest things about this band is that they manage to sound like old-school thrash without sounding like a throwback. Sebastian Alcamo (drums) and Michael Gabor (bass) keep things grounded beautifully. They make a great team. Since I love thrash metal in every variety, I found plenty to enjoy here. Some of the tracks work out some of the band’s science fiction interests in ways that are slightly progressive. Those compositions are generally good, but they sometimes drag things out too much. This band is definitely at their best when they cut loose and thrash. Check out “Amorphous Forms” and “Cosmic Debt.”
