Stoned Diplodocus: Ante Mortem

Here is another new band to me. Stoned Diplodocus hail from Quistreham, France and have released three platters thus far. Their first Weird Jamming Tapes (demo) came out in 2015 followed by their self-titled release in 2016 which should be considered their first ‘proper’ release. Ante Mortem is their latest endeavour so let’s dig in.

The band plays heavy, stoner fuzz rock with the guitar front and center. Distorted riffs and feedback to go along with cleaner guitar sounds but mostly this is pretty heavy stuff. Sometimes droning sounds are used to build the piece before erupting in total apocalyptic chaos. It’s a pretty cool sound and fans of heavy stoner rock should lap this up. Lots of guitar jams and trance-like repetition should get your attention if you are so inclined. This is mostly instrumental although there are some vocals, mostly of the screaming/shouting variety, sort of distorted and somewhat buried in the mix. They are a bit rough for me as I could have done with less screaming although I will say they fit with the band’s heavy riff based style.

There are only four tracks but the fifty-nine minute running time ensures more than enough room for fuzzed out psychedelic and doomy jams. It’s an intense listen and not for the faint of heart so be ready for a heavy assault on your senses. With improved vocals I think Stoned Diplodocus could eventually hit it out of the park. As it stands an enjoyable listen nonetheless.
