Beerwolf: Planetfall

All snarled riffs and desert baked fuzz. That’s what you get on the latest from Tampa, Florida’s Beerwolf titled Planetfall. The disc was originally released independently in October of 2017 but caught the attention of Ripple Music and was rereleased in August of this year. The band’s debut album Oracle Prophecy came out in 2015. Planetfall has been my introduction to the band.

This band lays down some huge riffs throughout the album. Probably some of the thickest I have heard this year. The fuzz is dominant and the progressions catchy and absorbing. There are nine tracks in all, a nice mixture of vocal and instrumentals. The vocals of Jason Kleim, who also plays bass, adds a melodic dimension to the music as his voice is very good and a perfect match for the ensuing heaviness that Matt Howland (guitar) and Ashwin Prasad (drums) provide.

The instrumental title track starts the album on solid footing with its massively doomy riffs and swirling heaviness. Doom/stoner metal at its finest. On “Eagle Shirt” the tempo is quicker, another solid metal barrage and yes, its heavy as hell with a nice vocal melody to boot. This one will certainly get the party started. Oh yeah, there is some nice guitar soloing on these tracks including this one. With its nod to the ‘70s and its heavy psychedelic foundation, “Hunters Of Night” is one of my favourite tracks. The riffs have that psychedelic swirl and the guitar solo rips through the seriously heavy soundscape like a whirling dervish. The vocals are again excellent. More ripping solo guitar and heavy fuzz can be heard in “Haze Arcane” followed by the catchy vocal melody and stellar riff progression of “Crom’s Steel”, another album highlight.

Planetfall is one of the best stoner metal albums of the year. Enough said.
