The Playback: Prophets and Thieves

Hudson Valley, New York act The Playback are back with their second EP, this one titled Prophets and Thieves, which once again features the line-up of J. Michael Prizzi (guitar), Travis Schifko (vocals), Randall Federighi (bass), and Kyle Buckley (drums). Containing four tracks, Prophets and Thieves features the bands brand of bluesy & metallic modern rock, thick with Prizzi's meaty licks and Schifko's potent vocal delivery. Opening cut "Broken Hearted" has a great hook and seems ripe for modern alternative audiences, while the darker, heavier "Parameters" features Prizzi's driving, crunchy blues rock riffs and screaming wah-wah solos over propulsive rhythms. Fans of Black Country Communion will love this track. Groove laden bass from Federighi leads in the moody "Bury These Things", a bluesier affair that ebbs and flows nicely, a varied vocal attack from Schifko soars over some potent drum work courtesy of Buckley and Prizzi's array of gentle, effects laden chords and screaming lead work. Massive thump rears its head on the rousing closer "Left for Ransom", another chunky, groove heavy blues rocker, the band locked in tight, the riffs mighty, and Schifko's vocals lending a modern edge to this great old school styled number.

Definitely a tad darker & meaner than their self-titled EP from 2017, Prophets and Thieves sees The Playback settling into their skin nicely, coming across more confident and willing to take some chances into heavier waters though still accessible enough. Well done guys.
