Unprocessed: Perception
German prog metallers Unprocessed formed in 2013 and released their debut album In Concretion in 2013. They followed that up with an EP titled Perception, the subject of this review. They have subsequently released their third album Covenant in April, 2018 and given how much I like Perception I really want to give the new one a listen. Anyway, back to the band.
Playing on the album are Manuel Gardner Fernandes (vocals, guitar), Christoph Schultz (guitars), Christopher Talosi (guitars), Simon Lorenz (bass) and Jan Aimène (drums). Lorenz and Aimène have since left the band and have been replaced by David Levy and Leon Pfeifer respectively.
The band play modern progressive metal with elements of industrial and djent styles. The poly rhythmic attacks are highly proficient and technical, these guys are very skillful at what they do. Keyboards also seem to be used extensively to accentuate mood and atmosphere although none are listed in the credits. Plaintive soundscapes are accentuated with acoustic guitars and laid back vocals but when the heavy riffs enter they do so with power and speed. The music can get quite dense and the vocals sometimes processed, even venturing into harsher growls absorbed by the heavy walls of sound. There is great variety here as this is not your typical by the numbers prog metal band and the music is better because of it.
Favourite tracks include the heavy crunch and moody soundscapes of “Präludium”, the Middle Eastern accents in the dark and riff laden “Ocean Of Silence” and the incredibly technical “Desert By The Sea” highlighting the band’s amazing musicianship.
If you dig your progressive metal with moments of ambience and atmospheric builds you really need to check out this album. Highly recommended.
