Trip Lava: Ounds

Trip Lava is, for want of a better word, a real ‘trip’. The band is actually the work of one musician, multi-instrumentalist Joel Lee. Yes, this is another one man band project but don’t let that concern you as this album is very well done. Whether or not you will like this, however, remains to be seen.

Lee released his debut Oddball in the Corner Pocket in 2007, followed by Octaroid (2010) which leads us to his latest endeavour titled Ounds. Ounds has been my introduction to Lee’s music and I am glad to have made this discovery. This album is downright bizarre, from the artwork to the music and will certainly keep the listener guessing as to what will come next. Space/psych/avant-prog, even a little Krautrock influence, this album is as trippy as I have heard all year. It is also one of the stranger concoctions I have listened to but to my surprise it works. Lee’s unusual sound manipulations are very effective if a little ‘difficult’ and his use of synths and keys is a big part of his sound.

The title track is weird and trippy with programmed drums and a buildup of synths. The guitar is also cool, very textural and sonically gripping. The synths and electronics come in waves in the equally absorbing “Oblivision” and with “Ouseh Of Orsmirr” the elastic like sound effects are just cool to listen to. Lee’s sound manipulations throughout the album are very impressive.

This has been an unexpected surprise so if you dig trippy music do yourself a favour and dig in.
