Adam Price Group, The: House Ghosts

Adam Price is based in eastern Pennsylvania where he has been a session musician for quite some time. He attended school in New York and received a Bachelor’s degree in Classical Clarinet Performance. House Ghosts is his debut album.

Price specializes in clarinet and saxophone but for this album it’s all clarinet. He has a stellar group behind him including Isamu McGregor (piano), Jack Synoski (bass), Spencer Inch (drums), Jeff Hatcher (percussion), Kristina Rajgelj (vocals) and Jon Bell (triangle, cowbell, whistle, autoharp).

Price proves to be an excellent leader showcasing his amazing arsenal on the clarinet yet allowing each member to take the lead when the need arises. And everyone is up for the challenge.

The disc begins with “Mzungu”, highlighted with Caribbean-like rhythms, wonderful piano and clarinet solos and superb hand drums giving this one a tribal feel at times. Rajgelj’s perfectly pitched vocals grace the sultry “Chameleon Colored Eyes” where Latin grooves and Price’s clarinet solo offers a kaleidoscope of colourful notes and winding musical lines. “The Girl In The White Dress” has that smoky jazz club feel with delightful piano and clarinet. The snappy and upbeat “Rotten Grapes” is a swinging little tune that puts a smile on my face every time. The alternating clarinet and drum fills shows off some fantastic chops. Indeed, the musicianship is riveting throughout all nine tracks.

If this first album is any indication, The Adam Price Group has a tremendous future ahead of them. All jazz fans needs to check them out.
