Svart Records is proud to announce the latest release from North Carolina duo New Light Choir, Torchlight. Comprised of John Niffenegger (guitars, vocals) & Chris Dalton (drums), New Light Choir play a classic form of heavy metal with plenty of prog & space rock influences, punctuated by John's high pitched vocal stylings and plenty of guitar textures. There's an epic feel to many of these songs, "Queen of Winter" majestic and letting their prog side come out, while "Firebird" bustles along with near speed metal abandon, Dalton's drums potent in their intensity and guitars firing off in every direction. "Omens" comes across like a strange hybrid of early Iron Maiden and Hawkwind, while "Adamantine" reminds of vintage Manilla Road. Blast beats add an intriguing, almost 'black metal' element to the otherwise quite melodic and driving metal ripper "Psalm 6", and the band even move into crushing doom on the surging "Moondawn Mirage III", showing that they have plenty of varied tricks up their sleeves.
Fascinating stuff here on Torchlight, New Light Choir showing that they aren't just satisfied sticking in one style, instead perfectly happy mixing things up a bit from track to track, making this a very varied and enjoyable album of heavy sounds.
