Hailing from Toulouse, France, Witchthroat Serpent are a doom trio comprised of Fredrik Bolzann (vocals, guitar), Niko Lass (drums), and Lo Klav (bass), whose latest album Swallow the Venom is out now on Svart Records. Their last album Sang-Dragon was released in 2016 and turned a lot of heads towards their brand of psychedelic stoner/doom, and this new collection of eight bruisers is sure to take that one step further.
Easily taking their cue from the mighty Black Sabbath, Pentagram, and St. Vitus, Witchthroat Serpent have woven some mighty proponents of the 'riff' here, with just the right amount of creepy atmosphere and psychedelia to add an extra flair to the proceedings. Plenty of fuzz dripping all over the arrangements of tracks such as "Pauper's Grave" and "Lucifer's Fire", and you can toss in some feedback and powerhouse drumming to the equation on the steamrolling "The Might Of The Unfailing Source". It doesn't get much heavier than "Scorpent Serpion", Bolzann's riffs mighty and quite lethal, and he's at it once again on the serious heft of "Hunt For The Mountebank", the fuzzy distortion saturating his already mountainous barrage of power chords. "No More Giant Octopuses" closes things out, the heavy riffing supporting the lyrical message of how humans are killing all the majestic creatures of the ocean, another killer track on this very heavy and enjoyable album.
If you love your doom bombastic and with a touch of psych, Swallow the Venom will be a welcome addition to your music collection. Some of the heaviest, fuzz laden riffs I've heard this year included on this one!
