Freedom Hawk: Beast Remains

Whether you call their form of rock and metal stoner, doom, retro, sludge or any other the label, Virginia based Freedom Hawk have been plying their trade since 2005 and have released five albums to date including their latest titled Beast Remains. And a beast of an album this is. I have had the pleasure of reviewing their first two albums; Sunlight (2008) and their self-titled sophomore effort released in 2009. Both albums are impressive riff fests featuring great grooves, fiery guitar and solid lead vocals. Well, the band has continued that quality on this latest release, maybe even surpassing them in terms of overall hooks and catchiness.

The first track “Solid Gold” is a chugging rocker with Eddie Vedder-like vocals. I dig TR Morton’s rather laid back delivery but when he wants to let loose he certainly has the pipes. There’s a cool echo effect on some of the vocals that also works really well. This is followed by “Danger” with its tight chord progressions and fuzzed out guitar solo. More great chugging riffs can be heard in the excellent “Darkness and the Light”. That said, the band knows enough to offer a little variety easing off the heavier riffs and adding some lighter moods. “Brutal Winds” brings the pace to a full gallop before atmospheric guitar slows it down. Another excellent track. Big doomy riffs and Ozzy-like vocals inundate the Black Sabbath inspired title track while scorching guitar solos highlight both “Deep Inside” and “Coming After You”.

Freedom Hawk should greatly appeal to fans of Queens of the Stone Age, Kyuss, Monster Magnet, Black Sabbath and other related bands. If you haven’t heard the band before I urge you to give this one a listen. If you have, well, you know what to do.
