Crommie, Daniel: Phantoms from the Passed

Prolific ambient/electronic artist Daniel Crommie has been making music since 1975 and has been involved with a number of projects including Group Du Jour, Saturnalia Trio and the DC Sound Collective. This new album titled Phantoms from the Passed is a career retrospective spanning the years 2005 to 2018.

Now as you might have read in some of my other reviews of Crommie’s music he isn’t for everyone. Much of his music is rather on the mellow side and this set focuses more on the ambient electronic style than anything else. The album ending “Storm Front” is a good example of a piece that unfolds very slowly and being a fan of new age is almost mandatory. That said, Crommie’s playing is very good, quite pleasant and refined and easy enough on the ears when the mood arises. I would categorize this for late night listening when you want something firmly on the mellow side of the spectrum.

For a completely relaxing and pleasant listen try the repeating synth melody in “Going Under”, the gentle flute led “The Leaf Gatherers” and the mysterious dripping water effects of “Deep Cave Antlers”.

Besides engineering and production duties Crommie plays all the instruments himself including C concert flute, wood and clay flutes, analogue and digital synthesizers, devices, samples, electric dulcimer, sequences and rhythm loops.

So there you go. I can safely say this is for fans of new age and ambient music. A New Weave music production.
