It must be every musicians' dream to one day perform on the stage of The Royal Albert Hall in London...just as much as it probably is every music fans desire to actually witness a performance of your favorite artist on that very same stage. Check both of these off for Steven Wilson and his adoring fans who took part in Home Invasion: In Concert at the Royal Albert Hall, the last of a three night run at the historic theater in March of 2018. Filmed & recorded here in its entirety, this concert sees Wilson joined by Alex Hutchings (guitar, vocals), Ninet Tayeb (vocals), Nick Beggs (bass, stick, vocals), Craig Blundell (drums), and Adam Holzman (keyboards) for a lengthy set list that draws from his solo career & Porcupine Tree repertoire and is in direct support of the To the Bone record.
The video aspect of this live album has been expertly filmed, with top notch camera work and pristine sound, the band sounding tight and completely on point, taking their blend of progressive rock, power pop, and straight ahead ass-kicking rock 'n' roll to new heights, these songs just coming across that much more powerful in a live setting. Wilson & Tayeb are a great vocal duo, both meshing perfectly on the rocking "People Who Eat Darkness" and the masterful "Pariah", but the songs on display here also sparkle due to some splendid musical contributions from everyone in the band. Wilson's guitar solos are searing in a sort of David Gilmour way, while Hutchings brings a more jazzy, almost Allan Holdsworth style, the two working off each other quite nicely throughout this set. Blundell's acrobatic drum work also shines, as does the nimble bass & stick work of Beggs, while Holzman's vast array of keyboard textures is the glue that holds it all together and gives everything a nice proggy touch. Throughout the set, the audience was treated to plenty of visuals, including dancers, lights, and other assorted projected images that brings to mind classic Pink Floyd and Peter Gabriel concerts from yesteryear, making for what must have been a mindblowing experience sitting there in the Royal Albert Hall and witnessing it all.
Home Invasion: In Concert at the Royal Albert Hall is one of 2018's finest live albums/videos, plain and simple...it doesn't get much more majestic than this.
