Here's a unique experience-a live album by one of the classic death/thrash/doom metal bands, performed at the Stockholm Royal Albert Hall while surrounded by over 30 of Sweden's most well known ballet dancers. Entombed and ballet...this is a joke right? Nope!
Recorded back in 2002, this live event is just now being released by Candlelight Records, and while I'm sure a DVD of the show would be a lot more impressive (as would the official digi-book release which supposedly contains loads of photos from the event), this is still a very good sounding live album nontheless. There's plenty of meaty and distorted metal here, and the songlist is made up of tunes from throughout the bands career. Tunes like the stoner madness of "Returning to Madness", the swelling doom of "Night of the Vampire", and the gothic death metal of "In the Flesh" are all given royal treatment, and while no one will ever proclaim Entombed the most talented band on the face of the earth, they deliver a crushing performance here that will please any fan of the genre. Perhaps the best cut is the closing scorcher "Left Hand Path", a trippy psychedelic instrumental rocker with searing, distorted guitar leads and heavy grooves that reminded me of a metalized Ozric Tentacles almost. While the running time of the CD is just under 40 minutes, which might be a little short for some, there's just enough to crushing riffs, pounding & fuzzed bass, driving drums, and angry vocals to fill your appetite.
