We don’t receive many albums by Russian bands here at Sea of Tranquility. But Ruin, the third full-length release from the muscular Moscow-based quintet Tantal, is well worth seeking out. Fronted by explosive yet elegant singer Sofia Raykova, Tantal combines elements of progressive, gothic and modern metal (plus even tinges of death metal), taking influences from the likes of Katatonia, Evergrey, Arch Enemy, Redemption, Fates Warning, Lacuna Coil, Dream Theater and Iron Maiden. Raykova’s vocal confidence, backed by intricate arrangements expertly performed and wrapped around dark and emotional lyrics, makes Tantal one of 2018’s most rewarding spins for new listeners. Engaging packaging and an artful booklet round out this release, which is “dedicated to the loving memory of those we’ve lost.”
