You may have reached the point where you no longer care what former members of L.A. Guns and the London Quireboys are doing, and that’s OK. But for those still interested, you need to know about The Brutalists -- the new band formed by Faster Pussycat/L.A. Guns founding bassist Mick Cripps and London Quireboys founding bassist Nigel Mogg (who, incidentally, is the nephew of UFO vocalist Phil Mogg. Interestingly, on the self-titled debut from this five-man outfit, Cripps plays guitars and keyboards while Mogg sings. Neither of them appear to have touched a bass during the recording of these 12 songs.
The album boasts a catchy and distinctly British vibe that trumps any Hollywood Strip sleaze rock you might be expecting, given The Brutalists’ pedigree. There’s even a tune called “Nutter,” which is UK for “crazy.”
Cleopatra Records -- renowned for its dedication to underground and British punk bands -- claims The Brutalists play “the dirty, leering blues of pub rock and R&B, the urgency of street punk and the synthesized dance ennui of post-punk, seasoned with bits of ska and reggae.” That’s a pretty solid summary of this album, and there are way worse records to spend 41 minutes with.
