Contrast, The: Madhouse of Inventions

Hailing from the United Kingdom, The Contrast, led by Glasgow borne David Reid has recently released their eight album titled Madhouse of Inventions. As has been so often the case recently I have discovered some excellent new music from another artist I had no idea existed until now. This stuff could be on the radio if given half the chance. That is not meant to disparage the band in any way, this album is fine pop music spiced with new wave and ‘60s era psychedelia. To my ears the main influence has to be late ‘70s/early ‘80s Elvis Costello, especially the keyboards and vocal style. I just love the organs and vocals here as I have always dug that ‘60s style panache and Reid’s sometimes deadpan delivery is so darn infectious delivering earworm after earworm.

Slightly fuzzed out ‘60s style pop music can be heard on the opening track “Bureaucrats” with its addictive lead and backing vocals and keyboard melody. The more urgent title track is another catchy moment as is the organ in the psychedelic inspired pop of “The Holy Grail”. A somewhat muted riff and chiming guitars in “Your Secret” and “Before This Caper Goes Down” respectively makes for a couple more highlights.

If you enjoy early new wave, especially artists like Costello, you really should investigate Madhouse of Inventions. Click on the link below to learn more.
