Broken Home: Fragments

You’ve got to hand it to Angel Air Records. Renowned for reissuing often obscure pop and rock albums from the 1960s and 1970s, the independent UK-based label also issues new releases by both vintage and new bands.

Such is the case with Broken Home, which formed from the ashes of Mr. Big (the British pop-rockers, not the American hard rockers), and released two albums in the 1980s. Fragments, the third release from Broken Home, sounds neither fragmented nor broke. Led by vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Jeff Pain (better known as “Dicken”), Broken Home evokes the less complicated days of AOR-tinged rock. The band effortlessly harmonizes on memorable tracks such as “When You’re Young” and “Spirit,” while elsewhere Broken Home indulges in an old-school sound that brings to mind The Who, solo Paul McCartney and even Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.

Don’t listen to Fragments expecting to hear anything you haven’t heard before, but sometimes that’s the beauty of discovering new music. The familiarity of the unknown can make all the difference.

Broken Home: Fragments
Posted by Jon Neudorf, SoT Staff Writer on 2019-07-29 05:56:51
My Score:

Jeff Pain, otherwise known as Dicken, is a British rock musician who formed Mr. Big, his ‘70s rock band which disbanded in 1978. In 1979 he formed Broken Home, which went on to release two albums; a self-titled debut (1980) and Life (1981). It is been an awfully long time but fans of the band will be delighted to hear the third album Fragments released in 2018.

Being a big fan of ‘70s classic rock I was immediately drawn to this album. There is something about being transported back in time to my favourite musical era that always leaves me with a good feeling inside. That is what these fourteen tracks do beginning with the album opening “When You’re Young”. It’s a catchy mid-tempo rock song with lyrical poignancy and a ‘70s bent. “Rebel Children” is much heavier and darker with weightier lyrical themes and more bite on the guitar. The burning blues rock of “Fan The Flame” and the energetic and classic rock vibe in “Spirit” offer up more delicious melodies and solid veteran musicianship. The band slows down the tempo with the nice ballad “Ship Without A Sail” and the very catchy “New Adventure” is a major earworm with nice acoustic guitar, string orchestrations and background organ layers. Similarly, “Summer It Won’t Be Long” is another melodic gem.

I really can’t say enough about the superb melodies found throughout Fragments. It creates a warm feeling deep inside and you really can’t ask for much more than that.

An Angel Air Records release.
