Monika Wall is a Canadian born artist having started her career as an opera singer but now focusing on singer/songwriter material. Her first album Parallel Mondo was released in 2012. Her follow up titled Earth was released in late 2018 and is the first I’ve heard from the artist.
This isn’t something that would typically be reviewed on SoT but it was sent our way so here it goes. This is a light hearted affair of pop and gospel with a positive message spread over six tracks and twenty-two minutes of music. The playing is nice enough throughout but it is really the vocals of Wall which stand out here. “Let It Flow” begins the set with its gospel pop flavourings. The melody is nice with Wall’s enchanting voice leading the way. The organ is also a nice touch. “Slings And Arrows” is a poignant offering with soaring vocals in the chorus and gentle acoustic guitar. Tasty rhythm guitar helps to shape the uplifting pop of “Moments” as well as piano and organ. “One Step” has more of a blues feel with Wall’s vocals having a sultry vibe. The piano courtesy of Jonathan Alexiuk and fine trumpet work from Richard Gillis are most welcome giving the track a bit of pizzazz. With “Season Of Rain” the approach is more folk/pop, another catchy track. The last track “We Will Rise” is pure gospel with both its message and its music.
Earth is well done gospel/pop album but isn’t something I would normally listen to. Never the less I did find it enjoyable while it lasted.
