Pulchra Morte: Divina Autem Et Aniles

Back in September 2018, Pulchra Morte released a limited edition 7” that not only offered fans their first taste of “Soulstench,” but also included a cover of “The Painless” by Paradise Lost that is definitely worth hearing. Covers honestly don’t always work, but Pulchra Morte has done a good job with “The Painless” and I think fans might want to hear it. I’ve included a formal track listing for the 7” just beneath the information about the full-length release.

If you’re at all interested in this album, make sure you check out the cover art by Jordan Barlow. It’s the perfect image for this album because it is menacing while also capturing a sense of the band’s deliberate and crushing style. I think fans of the music will love this image. It’s something right out of a medieval nightmare. It’s also just a cool images of a small band of undead ever pressing forward. That’s what this album is"a heavy, deadly, and deliberate piece of songwriting that never lets up until its passed you by.

As for Divina Autem Et Aniles, it’s a solid piece of musical gloom that should bring hundreds of fans to Pulchra Morte. The band writes music that hearkens back to the best death / doom metal from the late 80s / early 90s but does so with a sound that will quickly set this band apart from others. For those unfamiliar with the band, they formed back in 2017 with current members Clayton Gore (drums / backing vocals), Jason Barron (vocals), and Jeffrey Breden (guitars). They are joined on this album by guest musicians Heather Dykstra (additional vocals), Naarah Strokosch (cello) and Tor Stavenes (additional vocals). The result is a strong piece of extreme metal. The songs are well-written and hearken back to classic death / doom in all the right ways. The album, recorded by Jarrett Pritchard and mastered by Chris Common, is a meaty and moving work of death / doom. Pritchard also adds his guitar talents to the band.

If you listen to “Soulstench,” the band’s first single, you’ll get a good sense of the album right away. You’ll also want to hear more. I recommend “Fire and Storm” because it is heavy and cool but also enriched by Strokosch’s cello in ways that give things even more emotional depth. I also suggest “Give No More,” the killer opening track. If you’re still interested after those tracks, just keep listening. “Thrown to the Wolves” is an awesome track that captures the band’s deliberate and dense style. That was easily one of my favorite tracks. I also recommend “IX,” a solid instrumental that keeps the death / doom caravan moving forward.

This is a terrific album from an awesome band. If Pulchra Morte keeps making music like this, they will easily stand out as one of the great death / doom bands out there. Highly recommended.
