Deathchant: Deathchant

Just when I thought there couldn’t be any more interesting band names with “death” in them, along comes Deathchant. Even better, the band looks back to that heavy rock style"they rightly call it “psychedelic heavy proto-metal” that led to the extreme styles that so many of us love. Looking backward can be risky, but Deathchant does a nice job of capturing an old-school sound without simply repeating everything. Besides, psychedelic heavy rock still has plenty of expressive possibilities and this band takes advantage of dozens of them. Making things even cooler, the band recorded this album live over a two-day period in a cabin in Big Bear, California. That tells me the band wants to capture things as they happen and that they have a spontaneous side. That’s a good thing, especially with music as lively as this is. I think that listeners will enjoy the band’s psychedelic qualities, especially on tracks like “Control” or “Ritual.” For those interested in deeper cuts, I recommend “Hex” or “Breathe.” I also recommend “Eulogy,” a slower track that shows off the band’s soulful side.

For those wondering if this band does something more than just heavy rock, you’ll want to know that the band also plays with noise in ways that soak the music in extra layers of sound. Often surprising and consistently solid, this album is nothing less than a celebration of heavy sound. Did I mention that the vocals are also drenched in reverb? That gives the music a haunting quality that I think potential fans will enjoy. Check out the cover art, too. It’s really cool. This is a terrific debut!
