Mother Witch & Dead Water Ghosts: Ruins Of Faith

Mother Witch & Dead Water Ghosts hail from Odessa, Ukraine. I’ll tell you, this is a case where the name of the band fits the style of music like a glove. I’ll let you think about that for a second.

I believe the band have five releases so far but they are not all full length albums and some may only be single tracks. That’s neither here nor there as this review deals with their 2015 release titled Ruins Of Faith. Although the band is on Bandcamp and Facebook I wasn’t able to find a band member or instrument list so hopefully information will become more readily available as the band picks up steam. Ok, so just what are we dealing with here? Just looking at the name would suggest doom, perhaps psychedelic and a good dosage of the occult. And that is pretty much what you get. Also, I wish there were more than five tracks as this is an excellent disc.

The first track “Subterranean V” begins with fuzzed out doomy riffs that continue through the entire piece. A second guitar joins for some trippy soloing, very psychedelic, a perfect complement to the heavy riff progressions. It’s a short but excellent start to the album. On “Storm” the band really shows what it can do. A deep low sound, probably guitar creates an unsettling atmosphere of distortion and reverb. The Grace Slick-like vocals are a great match for the doomy riff progressions and retro sound. Soon a fuzzy sounding solo unfolds before things go quiet with subdued guitar and vocals. This song is a real trip and I mean that in a good way. You got to love the repetitive riffs in “Grace” and those vocals are so cool, very psychedelic. Sometimes repetitiveness in music doesn’t work but not in this case. These riffs will soak directly into your brain. There are two more tracks, the somber and doomy title track with mellower clean guitar parts mixed with the heavy fuzz and “Two Of Us” featuring some of the coolest vocals on the disc. Again, psychedelic and doomy are the operative words here. The warble effect half way through is pretty neat.

Here’s the deal. If you like your doom with heavy doses of trippiness and great vocals you should really check this band out. It’s an excellent disc.

Released on The Mighty Riff Records label.
