Six Pack Of Doom: Die Hipster Scum

Die Hipster Scum yelp California’s, Six Pack Of Doom. A punk-pop-metal hybrid of a release where the half hour or so blast revealed finds this four-piece seriously not taking themselves seriously, while being very serious about it; cartoon album cover-art contradicted by track titles like “All My Friends” and “Comfortable Sin”. There’s anger here - and fun times - and often they cross over. Sometimes they do not…

With a lo-fi, old school sound that brings everything from Peter And The Test Tube Babies to early Suicidal Tendencies and S.O.D. to mind, we careen through a clattering cacophony of double tracked vocals, attitude soaked riffs and skate-punk. Where things comes a little unstuck is that while there’s no denying that the punk DIY ethos resides in this situ, everything feels just a little too polite; the crunching, angry production required to truly elevate this style into the world changing stratosphere it desires, sadly lacking. And this affliction blunts the blood stained scissors of “C.O.L.”, where a surprisingly tasty guitar solo lives, while “The Skeleton” isn’t much more than the bare bones of a good idea that its title suggests. And that’s the rub here, for while the attack and bite of “Chain Of Command” or “The Hipster Scum” never really gets a chance to make their mark, the searing mid-paced smack of “Learn To Forget” does actually suggest that this lot aren’t all that far away from what they want to be - even if the vocals still don’t really convince.

With effort and attitude aplenty, Six Pack Of Doom should be commended for staying true to their musical roots. What’s required to lift that endeavour and turn it into something of long lasting impact, is a stronger sound and, in truth, more than the one truly memorable song contained here.
