Eversinceve: Fire Finds Beauty In Ashes

When first pressing play to start listening to Eversinceve's (pronounced Ever Since Eve) Fire Finds Beauty In Ashes, the opening guitar licks made the CD sound promising. After about 10 seconds, and when vocalist Paul Varian began "singing", I knew that I was in for a rough ride. Eversinceve is a metal hybrid (thrash, metalcore, death, black) metal band that hails from South Florida.

As much as I'd like to say something positive about this CD, I am finding it very difficult to do so. The vocals are extremely gruff sounding, lacking little emotion, with only a few hints of harmony within. The entire CD is very thrashy, without much variation, unless you count the 2 acoustic guitar instrumentals, "At The End" and "Kaia Vuggesang", complete with the opening rainstorm, ala "Riders On The Storm" by the Doors. Somehow, while these 2 instrumentals are the most easy listening on the CD, they do not seem to fit in with the rest of the very headbanging effort from Eversinceve.

The few positives include the guitar work in the instrumentals, plus the melodic guitar sound of "Undone", and a decent guitar solo in "Hole Inside", which is actually performed by a session musician. Another negative is the relatively short 33 minutes that this CD is.

I would suggest that if Eversinceve were serious about improving their sound, they should listen to some early Iced Earth to see how effective this style of metal can be when mixed with more progressive sounding elements, especially albums like Something Wicked This Way Comes or Days Of Purgatory. However, if you are a serious listener of metalcore or thrash, you may add an extra star.
