Cleaning Women: Intersubjectivity

If you go online, you can find pictures of the instruments this band used on this album. They’re actually really cool and you may even feel inspired by the way the band builds instruments out of unconventional stuff. I realize that “stuff” isn’t the most accurate word to use, but what else to you call household objects transformed into playable instruments?

As exciting as it is to listen to a band that makes instruments from household objects, there comes a point when you have to weigh in on the band’s overall quality. Was all their hard work worth the trouble or was it all just a strange gimmick? The answer to that question will largely depend on whether or not you enjoy the pulsating sound of music that probably belongs on the soundtrack to a strange new science fiction television show. And yet, you might also like it if you want to dance to something partly inspired by dance pop and partly by 80s industrial music. If you like that, you’ll certainly find something here to inspire some jumping around.

I was particularly drawn to the opening track “Playoff” because it was extremely catchy and because it was an instrumental. I didn’t mind the vocals on the other tracks, but the opening track caught me off guard with its bouncy rhythm and snappy melody. I also liked “We Work it Out” because it sounded so hopeful. I haven’t felt this positive since The Beatles also hoped we could work stuff out. Another highlight was “Life Among the Concrete Dust,” a slightly darker track that nevertheless captured just the right mood.

As good as those tracks are, the album was somewhat uneven. Tracks like “Je N’y Crois Pas” and “Party Teufel” never quite worked for me. Neither did the title track “Intersubjectivity.” It had a good beat but lacked the pep of the better songs. There’s no doubt Cleaning Women is better than their gimmick and in today’s market that’s a good thing.
