Lost Tribes Of The Moon: Lost Tribes Of The Moon
Female fronted doom is undoubtedly a thing right now, with numerous bands creepy-crawling from the gloom to delight us with their snail-paced riffs. However, Wisconsin’s Lost Tribes Of The Moon aren’t quite is fixated on the crawl, but more the overarching mood and tone they can create.
With only six tracks on show you might confuse this self titled debut for being an EP, but with three short tasters and three lengthy slabs, it’s undoubtedly an album and one to be taken seriously.
The brief scene setting “Intro/The Rise And Fall Of Midian” merely clears the floor through acoustic atmospheres, before “Wych Elm” hammers this band’s intent into place. An immediately biting riff snarls and snaps as the drum-clamour from Jeremiah Messner signifies the power at this band’s disposal. With her floating tones wafting into view, it’s singer Janine Rohde that offers up the difference, ethereal but powerful, focused, yet free, her voice pierces the blackened edge to the riffology with a simple air of authority. To be fair, there are times - usually when she’s really going for it - that the near out of control nature of her approach could be a stumbling block for some, but you still get the impression this lady knows exactly what she’s doing.
The variety in pace and attack of “Revenant” becomes a real feature, with an almost thrashy ferocity infused into the darker tones, although the spectre of Black Sabbath and Candlemass is never truly all that far away. The stand out moment in the eponymous “Lost Tribes Of The Moon” is the stinging Iommi like guitar solo from Jon Liedtke. His playing throughout and the manner in which he combines with bassist Ben Wright, is exemplary but the little finger tremble vibratos that punctuate this track are the highlight for me.
All that praise not withstanding, Lost Tribes Of The Moon do still have a few rougher edges that could be smoothed and in terms of structure, as a whole, this album can feel a little stop start; the shorter pieces sometimes coming across as though they’ve been added as a slight afterthought. However, as opening forays go, this is impressive.
