Far Corner: Risk

Another dark, swollen, brooding record from Cuneiform Records, Far Corner’s Risk. Mid 1970s King Crimson fans take immediate note, as well as fans of Anekdoten and Anglagard, maybe even Wobbler. Some will call this music extremely complex, I say it’s more about piling on sound and episode. As these songs develop, they punch up your senses until you either turn it down…or turn it up! ‘Fork’ is chamber-rock junk, jagged, backed by mellotron swells. ‘Night of Odds’ begins exactly that, the critters, creaking wood, odd voices then interrupted by ‘Alea Ludere’ a mash-up of Bela Bartok’s’ 3rd string quartet and Henry Cow getting funky and color-tainted. Finally, this nine-minute ride drives into Kansas territory a la ‘Magnum Opus’. The ‘cellist in this band has listened to Stanley Clarke play bass as well as Mark Summer, the founder of the Turtle Island String Quartet play the ‘cello. All the playing here is top notch albeit calculated, but that’s going to disappoint no one, believe me.

One of the most interesting aspects of certain progressive rock bands has been the infusion of modern avant chamber music. This style ( Univers Zero, Present, Art Zoyd) is every bit as expressive as the best of more conventional progressive rock, the opportunities for composition endless. There is nothing better on the cusp of spring than to have a chamber/prog winner like this to listen to, pick it up!
