Bloom is the ECM Records debut from US vocalist, storyteller, and pianist Areni Agbabian, and the album also features subtle percussion from Nicholas Stocker, who last appeared on the ECM label with Nik Bartsch's Mobile ensemble.
This is more laid back then anything Brian Eno released post Music For Airports. Apparently this music is for watching flowers grow in real time. We have Areni's vocals with occasional piano and assorted percussion without rhythm or beats of any kind. It sounds experimental and nostalgic on "The Water Bride" where she recites a poetic story of a bride becoming a fish like in the days of the beat poets of the early 1960's. Weird doesn't even begin to describe what I just heard, and overall this album is a departure from the jazz we normally hear coming out of the ECM camp. It is pleasant and relaxing but definitely NOT something you would want to drive to.
