Joe Policastro Trio: Nothing Here Belongs

With his previous albums focused on covering the material of others, albeit in a unique way, the Chicago based Joe Policastro Trio’s latest album Nothing Here Belongs brings the focus back to original music although three covers are interspersed throughout. The trio consists of Joe Policastro (bass), Dave Miller (guitar) and Mikel Avery (drums).

The disc’s first track is an interesting take on Springsteen’s “I’m On Fire” with the guitar carrying the melody. It’s familiar yet quite different at the same time and lends itself to a very enjoyable rendition. Fast and jazzy guitar runs highlight “Speak Slow(ly)” with the drums and bass taking a much more subtle approach but in full support nonetheless. Before long though the band is in full throttle working in complete synchronicity as a tight jazz trio. The bass solo is exceptional. The off kilter “Bloodshot” has the feel of bluesy backwoods with its slinky backbeat and sly bass groove. “In The Quiet” is just that, a quieter guitar led ballad that does get a little more spry towards the end while a cover of Santo & Johnny’s “The Wandering Sea” is all snarling guitar laid over a stellar rhythm section. The album ends with a cover of Talking Heads “This Must Be The Place” where the trio keep the essence of the original intact with its sparser arrangement and excellent guitar work.

Nothing Here Belongs is a highly enjoyable and completely absorbing work of the highest quality. An indelible mix of jazz and rock.
