Delain: Hunter's Moon

An EP? In 2019. How quaint and odd especially since a boatload of live extras make this a pretty full body of work. The live tracks are fine, definitely of a high standard and a good souvenir of the band’s recent tour which featured the mighty voice and presence of Nightwish’s Marco Hietala. Given that there’s quite a lot of Delain live material out there it’s not the USP for buying Hunter’s Moon, that would be the four new tunes.

"Masters of Destiny" is up first and if you have seen the promo video you will know that this is a sweeping and to use that horrific adverb ‘epic’ song which is on the more uncommercial end of Delain’s palate as to some extent is the title track which opens up with some growled vocals which tends to put some off but not me especially given the tight, insistent chorus. Excitingly the band’s hitherto compositionally quiet Timo Somers and Merle Bechtold step up to the metaphorical plate with "This Silence is Mine" and "Art Kills" and their writing style fits in well with the overall Delain oeuvre with "Art Kills" being particularly muscular.

I imagine that this product exists as a career stop gap and as something to hang a tour on and as a taster of what comes next it does a good job.
