Forged in Black: Descent of the Serpent
UK Metal band Forged In Black have returned with their second full length album, Descent Of The Serpent (Fighter Records). This 9 track record is full of melodic and powerhouse Heavy Metal, steeped in the traditional Metal of the forefathers of Maiden, Priest with a dash of Testament.
With one foot in Bay Area Thrash and the other foot somewhere in England, Forged In Black pounds their way through upbeat metallic songs like, “Seek No Evil” and “One In The Chamber” where they toss in some twin guitar harmony work and double bass kick drum fanfare, before breaking things down to a smoldering groove. Vocals are somewhere in between a HammerFall and Dream Evil type of Power Metal and these vocals are best shown on my favorite track, “Shadowcasters”. Vocalist Chris Storozyniski does a noble job throughout Descent Of The Serpent, with his range and falsetto usage.
Overall, I found Forged In Black’s Descent Of The Serpent to be a decent slab of Metal, nothing that you haven’t really heard before and not bad at all. Having said that, I also found it to not completely grab my attention in whole. They are some interesting elements and sonically, the album’s production is really good and modern sounding. Everything cuts through and sounds great. Descent Of The Serpent is a decent Metal album, but not a great one.
