Samael teases the listener with an amazing opener for their new album Reign Of Light. "Moongate" successfully combines the abrasive Metal vocals of Vorph with the Industrial Rock sensibilities of Keyboardist Xy (that's right, once again we get monikers instead of names). Its Midnight Oil meets Metallica. Not usually a combination you would expect to work, but "Moongate" pulls it off without a hitch.
But the band doesn't keep up this excellent blend. The CD slowly morphs from the electro/experimental metal in to harder and harder metal. Not that Samael isn't a good Metal band and not that the songs aren't developed very well, but after the opening track I was hoping for something new and challenging, but ended up with more of the same.
Of the numerous Metal acts that have been crossing my desk, Samael is better than most. But there just isn't enough power to hook you in or enough experimentation to keep your interest. Reign Of Light will not disappoint, but probably won't get tons of replay.
