Triple Tea: The Tunnel

Based out of Boston, the progressive jazz trio Triple Tea and their first disc titled The Tunnel has been a rewarding find. The mix of progressive music and jazz is not a revelation but this band makes such sweeping cinematic music one cannot help but be impressed. The trio is Tommaso Taddonio (piano), Martin Tamisier (drums) and Carlo De Baggio (acoustic bass). It’s an imaginative work beginning with the lead off track “1994”. A disjointed drum beat and crashing cymbals leads off as piano and more complicated drums evolve, building in loudness. The piano melody drifts steadily along as the band’s tempo varies in speed and the meter changes are smooth as silk. “Ephemera” begins on a slightly somber note with a pretty layering of piano and luscious bass tones. The bass solo is really impressive here as are the sweeping orchestral electronics adding a nice progressive touch. At times the keys generate a fuzzy texture in their sound. Complex rhythmic patterns and wonderful piano highlight “Resistance Part 1 & 2” while “Light Sprit” features multiple builds including electric piano and another great bass solo. For more stellar musicianship “Für Maryjane” is another one to check out. The song flows beautifully with another highlight reel bass solo. Very impressive indeed.

I think Triple Tea is a band that both prog and jazz fans will appreciate. The Tunnel is a fine debut and will hopefully get some attention and turn a few heads. Recommended.
