Kenosha Kid: Missing Pieces

Kenosha Kid is led by guitarist Dan Nettles and has just released their sixth album titled Missing Pieces. Rounding out the band are Rick Lollar (guitars), Robby Handley (bass) and Marlon Patton (drums). Also adding to most of the tracks is a string section consisting of Andrea Demarcus, Luca Lombardi and Serena Scibelli.

The music is definitely guitar driven, the dual guitar parts forming the bulk of these tracks but the rhythm section and added strings also play a hand. The musicianship is very good and the strings add a subtle nuance as they are woven seamlessly into the soundscape. Nettles notes in the press release his love of classical music was the main reason for the strings, that and the fact they serve to accentuate the guitar. The music can mostly be placed in the rock category but there is an eclecticism here that is hard to pin. Country, Americana, jazz and roots rock all play a part. The first couple of tracks, “Always Will Be” and “After This” display the quartet’s deep grooves and weaving guitar lines, the tone quite fuzzy and distorted. Sometimes the sound is quite dense, other times more mood laden. On “Another Hour” a mellow guitar and slow pace changes speed while remaining supremely catchy. These back and forth pace changes give this music its quirky nature. A darker atmosphere and ethereal string bending make “How Would It All Fit?” a dreamier piece, very relaxing and serene. A country/roots flavour highlights the catchy “Waiting For The Dam To Break”, another upbeat offering, belying the darkness upon which the piece was born.

Guitar driven rock fans should latch onto this one pretty easily. By all means check it out.
