Chocolate Watchband: This Is My Voice
Proto punk/psychedelic band Chocolate Watchband began in the heady mid-60s with the release of their first album No Way Out in 1967. Two more releases followed; The Inner Mystique in 1968 and One Step Beyond in 1969. Then the band called it a day. The band eventually reformed and released Get Away in 2000.
The band was known back then as a psychedelic/garage/proto punk outfit, with a raw edge and enthusiastic sound. This new platter has three original members; David Aguilar (vocals, harmonica, synths, acoustic and electric guitars), Tim Abbott (vocals, electric and acoustic guitars, synths, sitar, harmonica) and Gary Andrijasevich (drums, vocals, percussion). Newer members are Alec Palao (bass, acoustic guitar) and Derek See (electric and acoustic guitars, vocals).
The retro punk of “Secret Rendezvous” kicks off the album with its catchy synths, guitar and vocals. The next track “Judgment Day” is a slow burning blues number with acoustic guitar and harmonica. One of my favourite tracks is the retro psychedelia of “This Is My Voice” where sitar adds an Eastern flavour and the guitar, keys and choirs infuse a hazy dream-like state. More bluesy rock and roll can be heard on the fiery “Trouble Everyday” where the guitar has plenty of bite and snarl and the rhythm section plays with gusto. Again, the band takes us back in time to the early ‘60s with the retro rock of “Take a Ride” and the catchy “Talk Talk”, another toe tapping rocker.
I have really been enjoying This Is My Voice. After listening to the album a few times I think I can easily recommend this to fans of ‘60s psychedelic rock.
