PG13: PG13

West coast musician Phillip Greenlief began playing musical instruments in elementary school and in the mid ‘70s discovered his love for the saxophone. He has worked and recorded with an amazing number of artists and is currently involved with many projects, including PG13 and their self-titled album released in December, 2018. According to the press release the project is a tribute to Greenlief’s late cat, George Cleaver. Being a cat (and dog) fan I think that’s pretty awesome.

The trio makes some pretty heavy music, mostly in the realm of experimental metal. There is a huge amount of distortion and feedback as the thick rhythms weave in and out through tricky change ups and squelching saxophone. It does make for an interesting and fairly unique sound. Pounding drums and metallic guitar begin the opening track “Chapter Four� before saxophone joins the fray. It’s pretty catchy in an unorthodox way. This is a serious workout, especially when the squelching sax improvises over the pounding rhythmic attack. On “13.1� it’s more of the same but even more avant-garde with tricky tempos and a heavy experimental sound. The disjointed song structure will be hit or miss, depending on your love or lack thereof for improvisations and free form constructs. That said, the music does venture between composition and free form styles so you do get a bit of both. “Chapter Two� is of similar design but even more experimental. I found this one to be a bit harsh on the ears.

That’s pretty much what you get. A mixture of composition and free form structures, all instrumental and with a heavy metallic approach. Pop music this is not. Check out the link below to learn more.
