Nicky Barbato Project: Every Day is a Bad Hair Day
Nicky Barbato Project consists of Barbato (electric guitar), Tony Mason (drums), Jon Irabagon (tenor saxophone, organ, wurlitzer, vocals on track # 1) and Chris Anderson (bass). Their debut album titled Every Day is a Bad Hair Day was released about a month back. The sound is based on ‘60s surf music mostly identified with Barbato’s excellent guitar work. Whether it’s the twang of steel guitar or furious guitar shred, it’s at the core of what this band is all about.
The opening track “Blues Chip” mixes surf rock and jazz with some wild guitar progressions and a driving back beat. Barbato’s fret work is really quite amazing. Crazy cacophonic builds and chopped up structures give “50 Dollar Chevy” a hint of the avant-garde. The jerky rhythms slide into blues rock territory. The Beatles’ classic “Norwegian Wood” begins with the original melody intact before bursts of heavier sound penetrates the song’s flow. It’s certainly an interesting take and really why do a cover unless you are willing to make it your own? The band changes it up on the next couple of tracks. “Au Pair” takes on a ‘60s film vibe with added violin giving off a cinematic flair whereas the calm and mellow “Mr. Anderson” is more ambient and surreal with the guitar-scapes owing a nod to Robert Fripp. The cinematic approach returns in “Wife of a Secret Agent” having the band ease off the gas pedal, really quite pretty in its own unique way.
Music fans will certainly get something a little different with Every Day is a Bad Hair Day and instrumental guitar fans are sure to revel in Barbato’s considerable chops. I am really digging this one and I hope you will too.
