Michel Petrucciani Trio: One Night In Karlsruhe

He had become one of the most proficient jazz pianists the world had ever seen, released over thirty albums as a band leader and at the peak of his career was performing over one hundred concerts a year, all this with a debilitating disease that kept him in constant pain. Michel Petrucciani had brittle bone disease and was one hell of a pianist. If you haven’t heard his work, One Night In Karlsruhe (released on SWR jazzhaus continuing their piano heroes recordings) wouldn’t be a bad place to start. The concert took place in Karlsruhe, Germany on July 7, 1988. There are a total of ten tracks, five standards and five originals including the first track “13th”, a melodic piece showcasing great playing from his trio which included veteran jazz men Gary Peacock (bass) and Roy Haynes (drums). The piano work is magnificent. The Ellington penned “Sentimental Mood” brings back those heady days of classic jazz with a beautiful finesse while the trio’s treatment of Gershwin’s “Embraceable You” is in impeccable taste. The furious pace set by all three musicians in the excellent “One for Us” and the swinging free jazz of Coltrane’s “Giant Steps” will both astound the listener showcasing immense talent from all three members.

This is jazz on a grand scale. Virtuosic and stunning, One Night In Karlsruhe makes a grand statement of how jazz can and should be played. Absolutely magnificent.
