Blindside Blues Band: Live At Satyr Blues
Recorded back in 2014 in Poland, Live At Satyr Blues finds Mike Onesko and his Blindside Blues Band in their natural environment - kicking out the jams on stage in front of an enthusiastic audience. With drummer Jeff Martin (Badlands) and guitarist Jay Jesse Johnson also firing on all six, you van be assured that the triple B are in top form as they burn their way through a set pulled from their double digit studio releases. However, with the CD/DVD set, Live At The Crossroads arriving in 2012, only three of the ten songs included here aren’t contained in both sets, with “Flying”, “Blues In My Soul” and “Hit The Highway” exclusive - on stage at least - to this new outing. That said, there’s no arguing with the authority of “Let The Blues Do The Healing” and the fret powered surge that greets you at the beginning of “Crying Shame”, which leaves you agog at the musicianship on show. However, the talent sure doesn’t just come from the fret masters in this band, Martin allowed to run amok behind the kit on the fire cracking explosion that is “Hot Shot”.
Blindside Blues Band don’t go under that name for nothing and the heart tugging turmoil of the aforementioned “Blues In My Soul” shows the more tender side of the band perfectly. With Kier Staeheli on bass, the bottom end authority required to make “Crossroads” the hustling, bustling celebration it really should be, is there in abundance. However, here and elsewhere there’s no denying that it really is the frets that are flying as the guitar duo trade licks, flicks and all manner of other six-string madness, much to the audience at the Satyr Festival’s delight. Factor in the rich syrupy vocals from Onesko and you really couldn’t ask for much more from an energetic bunch of chops bustin’ blues bruisers. There’s very little in the way of frills here, just hard hitting, riff fuelled heavy rock of a type that we don’t seem to get that much of any more, with the set closing triumph of “Climb The Sky” being the perfect example of how it should be done.
One of those bands where it’s virtually impossible to work out why they haven’t become much more well known that they currently are, Blindside Blues Band are mighty in the studio, but as you’ll discover here, they are equally destructive onstage. Now, if they’d only play some shows here in Scotland, I’d be a happy man, but until they do, Live At Satyr Blues will be a more than welcome companion.
