Wonderworld: III

Wonderworld is a Norwegian hard rock/metal band with three albums to their credit, including their latest titled III. The band formed in 2013 but this is my first exposure to their music. Band members include Roberto Tiranti (vocals, bass), Ken Ingwersen (guitars, keys, backing vocals) and Tom Fossheim (drums). Guest musician Alessandro Del Vecchio adds keyboards and Hammond on three tracks.

After giving this one a few spins one thing is for certain, these are veteran musicians who know their way around a solid hook and a great riff. The guitar work throughout the disc is excellent with riffs having plenty of meat on the bone and the solos catchy and inventive. Tiranti’s vocals are also integral to the band’s sound as his tone is pretty unique adding some distinctiveness to their take on heavy rock. Tasty guitar work in the form of chugging riffs and ripping solos highlight the album opening “Background Noises”, a very good heavy rock tune. The next two tracks are even better; the catchy “Stormy Night” with cool bass and keyboards and the edgy “Big Word” where galloping guitar and a super catchy chorus will keep this one in your head for days. More catchy hard rock riffs can be heard on “Crying Out For Freedom” and the chorus on “A Mountain Left To Climb” is the tastiest on the disc. The guitar work on this one is a little funky at times. Another solid track is the Zeppelin inspired “Brand New Man”, a fine slice of hard rock that will take you back a few years.

If you enjoy heavy rock music of the ‘70s and ‘80s, I’m thinking bands like Deep Purple, Whitesnake and Aerosmith, but with their own unique spin, you really should give Wonderworld some attention. Now I need to check out I and II. Recommended.
